Abstract

While still in Genoa, Charles V sent a request to Clement that the imperial coronation might be solemnized in the papal city of Bologna, and not, as was normal, in Rome. Acutely aware of Turkish pressure on the eastern borders of his far-flung empire, Charles V was anxious to travel to Germany with all speed, to be as close as possible to the trouble-spot. Reluctantly, unwilling as ever to come to a definite decision without due deliberation, Clement eventually acceded to the emperor’s request, and preparations began for the pope’s journey north.

Italy at this time was thought of as a land belonging to nobody, or as an island in the Pacific, and the legitimate rulers of Italy were thought to be any who could surprise it and subject it.
