Abstract

Karen Blixen started her wonderful book ‘Out of Africa’ with the simple sentence ‘I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills’. I didn’t have a farm, but I lived in Africa, in Malawi, in 1979 and for part of 1980. I left with a deep affection for the country and for its people. For me, the expression ‘Malawi – the Warm Heart of Africa’ is a true statement and not just a slogan for use in a tourism marketing campaign.
