Abstract
It is often claimed that de facto economic integration has proceeded in East Asia. The claim is partially true and partially false. In fact, few rigorous studies have been conducted on how far integration has been realized or what sort of integration has been accomplished. We intuitively know that de facto economic integration in East Asia has not reached the level of the European Union (EU) at this point in time. Furthermore, the trajectory currently followed by East Asia seems to be different to the path which Europe once followed. The nature and characteristics of de facto economic integration are crucially important not only for academic interest but also for policy discussion on the currently promoted de jure economic integration in East Asia. This book is devoted to a deeper understanding of the on-going de facto economic integration in East Asia.
