Abstract
We tend to think of pollution as a modern phenomenon and whilst it is likely that we are now creating more than ever before, it is a problem that has been with us, for thousands of years in one form or another. The issue is perhaps more related to the fact that the more we understand about our environment the greater is our appreciation of the impact we are having. In some cases it is also true that technical advances have identified and curtailed some pollution whilst creating others.
