Abstract
Research has shown that structured treatment focusing on PTSD and trauma symptoms can ameliorate the effects of trauma (Taylor and Chemtob 2004). Even complex PTSD is ameliorated by CBT (Resick and Schnicke 1992; Resick et al. 2003). It is important to remember in treating PTSD in children that the impact goes far beyond the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria of intrusive recollections, numbing/withdrawal and hyperarousal, particularly if the symptoms have persisted for a period or if there were multiple traumatic incidents such as one finds in child abuse.
