Abstract
The American federal system has persevered for more than 200 years.1 In the annals of time, 200 years is not very long and we might better describe the American federal system as the American federal experiment. However, in modern history, and particularly the history of the nation-state, the longevity and stability of the American federal system stands out as remarkable, both for the strength of the institutions it created and the ability of the system to adapt to changing times, circumstances, and demands.
