Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to locate the present study within the existing research on educational and career choice. It starts by examining youth transitions in fairly general terms but, as the chapter progresses, the discussion becomes more tightly focused on issues directly relating to the transition from compulsory schooling at the end of the 1990s. Particular attention is paid to attempts to describe and conceptualise the choice process, and to the work of researchers who have been particularly influential in recent times. Research on educational choice at other points of transition is drawn on, where appropriate, in order both to make comparisons and to assess the relevance of any findings for post-16 decision making.
