Abstract

The highly visible autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) have been described in popular media in the past several years as an epidemic. On February 9, 2007, the New York Times published the results of the largest national study to date. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 560,000 Americans under age 21 have been diagnosed with autism, which means one out of every 150 school-age children.
