Northeast Brazil under the Lula Government

  • Chapter

Abstract

The Northeast is the region with the lowest per capita GDP in Brazil.1 While average per capita GDP in 2003 was US$4,309.24 per year, in the Northeast it only amounted to US$2,134.34. The second poorest region in the country was the North, but its yearly per capita GDP was US$2,731.81. This lower per capita GDP is particularly relevant when one takes into account that the Northeast is the region where 27.64 percent of Brazilian population lives. It has the second largest population in the country. It is therefore a problem that has to be tackled.
