Abstract
Charles Joseph McCarthy Jr. was born third of six siblings, July 20, 1933, in Rhode Island during the Depression. His Irish Catholic family with two older daughters Barbara and Helen moved to Knoxville in 1937 where the four-year-old’s father litigated for the Tennessee Valley Authority. They first lived on Cherokee Drive, then along Sherrod Road, finally in a white-clapboard house on Martin Mill Pike in the wooded hills, as two more sons William and Dennis and a third daughter Mary Ellen were born. In 1967 the family moved to Washington DC where Charles Senior worked as a principal TVA firm attorney. The McCarthys were relatively well off. Charles Junior eventually revised his name to “Cormac” for the ancient Gaelic king of Blarney Castle, “son of Charles” Joseph McCarthy Sr. and Gladys Christina McGrail.
