Abstract

Abu Dhabi is the largest of the Emirates. Since the eighteenth century, the Nahyan, a subsection of the Bu Falah, have been the recognized paramount family of the Bani Yas federation of tribes, providing all but one of its rulers. The first written reference to the Bani Yas is found in an Omani manuscript in 1633 (Tamman 1983: 24).
