Abstract

The structure and operating conditions of the French banking system have undergone far-reaching changes since the mid-1980s. One of the most significant of these developments has been a transformation of shareholder structures and a gradual return of banks to the private sector. The banking industry has also been marked by liberalisation, which has been boosted by the SMP, and booming capital markets, which have contributed to greater competition against a background of slower economic growth in the early 1990s.
