Abstract
The transformation of labour ideology during the Gorbachev era was a metaphor for the vast changes wrought by perestroika in other spheres of Soviet life. Beginning as the means through which economic recovery was to be effected, the search for labour productivity acted as a major catalyst for fundamental changes in political structures, social expectations and moral-ideological values.
