Abstract

The official birth of the Russian Empire took place on 22 October 1721. After a thanksgiving service Peter I (the Great) proceeded to the senate and there was acclaimed ‘Father of the Fatherland, Peter the Great, The Emperor of All Russia’. Imperial Russia ended with the abdication of Nicholas II in March 1917 and his eventual murder. The ‘Empire’ continued in a new form as the USSR, and even with its collapse continues in a milder form as the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). But when did Imperial Russia and the Empire begin?
