Abstract
The previous chapter argued that freedom, efficiency and equality are the sorts of values that can conflict. The present chapter is the start of a long effort to find out whether they must. It brings out the nature (and size) of the problem for egalitarianism through a discussion of incentives and their relation to economic calculation. By the end of the chapter, we shall have an idea of what egalitarian schemes would need to do to achieve efficiency.
