The Epistemological Significance of Transcendental Arguments

  • Hamid Vahid

Abstract

Another popular attempt to rebut Cartesian arguments has involved appealing to Kantian transcendental arguments. The topic of transcendental arguments has had a rather checkered history ever since it was introduced into philosophical literature by Immanuel Kant. He utilized these arguments in order to uncover the necessary conditions of the possibility of experience, and, thus, undermine Cartesian skepticism about our knowledge of the external world. The existence of objects in space, Kant claimed, is a necessary condition of the possibility of experience whose obtaining is recognized even by the skeptic.
