Abstract
By the first week in November, 1938, the British Government had reverted to the systematic defensive preparations combined with patient diplomacy which they had deemed appropriate before the recent crises. Within a month, between 11 November and 11 December, this policy had been once more thrown into confusion by developments which undermined the assumptions upon which it was based.
