Ethnic Media in USA: Giant Hidden in Plain Sight

  • Chapter
Transnational Lives and the Media

Abstract

The old American idea of the multicultural melting pot appears to be under great strain nowadays. The melting pot presupposed that there is a dominant stew into which we could add new ingredients — Italian oregano, Polish sausage and Chinese cabbage. Now, one in four Californians is foreign born, and projections are that by 2050 the USA will join California in having more nonwhites than whites, that dominant stew is gone. The question is more how are the Thaitowns and Little Saigons and Little Kabuls adjusting to each other in the New America?
