Abstract

Arguably the most significant contribution to health care research in the last century was the development of the methodology and methods of the randomised controlled trial. This development has led to the rejection of harmful treatments and the more rapid adoption of beneficial therapies. Other evaluative methods cannot be used to judge the effectiveness of interventions with the same degree of certainty as the RCT.
