Abstract
This study has focused on the phenomenon of transit migration as experienced inside and outside EU borders. It has presented the case both from a top-down and a bottom-up perspective, namely the perspective of the transit countries and that of the migrants themselves. I have used three different case studies to illustrate the transit experience: the case of member states on the periphery of the Union, exemplified by Greece; the case of Europe’s southern neighbours, exemplified by the Maghreb countries; and the case of Eastern European and CIS countries bordering the EU in the East.
