The Charms of Biljana, a Bajalica (Conjuror) in Budisava, Serbia

  • Chapter
Charms, Charmers and Charming

Part of the book series: Palgrave Historical Studies in Witchcraft and Magic ((PHSWM))

Abstract

The village of Budisava is to be found eighty kilometres from Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, in the northern province of Vojvodina. This province represents the crossing point of three major religions, Catholicism, Orthodox Christianity and Islam. Biljana, the focus of this chapter, is a folk-healer, who, by her own account, has practised popular medicine ‘all her life’. At one time she decided to leave her job of a secretary in the village school to dedicate herself to her ‘God given calling’, as she herself terms it.
