From an Issue-specific to a Global Partnership: Japan and the European Union

  • Chapter
Europe—Asia Relations

Part of the book series: Palgrave Studies in European Union Politics ((PSEUP))

Abstract

This chapter will try to illustrate the development of relations between Japan and the European Union (EU) from the problem-oriented single issue of trade to a more cooperation-oriented approach across a wider range of activities. In doing so, it will pay particular attention to the deepening and widening of integration in Europe, accompanied by the extending competence of the EU, and Japan’s shift in attitude towards evolving European integration.
