  • Chapter
The Assets Agenda

Abstract

This chapter considers the assets agenda within the realm of citizen-ship. The previous chapter looked at arguments about owning assets within the social policy field. Although ‘asset-based welfare’ shapes much of the way that assets are discussed today, Chapter 1 indicated that there is an alternative tradition feeding into this assets agenda. This has its origins in the work of individuals such as Thomas Paine and views the ownership of assets as an important element of citizenship. Thus, this chapter completes the exploration of the principal set of ideas informing the assets agenda that was started in Chapter 2.
