Editing a Top Academic Journal

  • Chapter
Opening the Black Box of Editorship

Abstract

As of the writing of this chapter (January 2007), I will have completed five years and about to begin my sixth and final year as editor of the Journal of Applied Psychology (JAP). The purpose of this chapter is to share some insights and provide advice to authors, and future editors and consulting board members for peer-reviewed journals. I will (1) provide some background regarding JAP; (2) share thoughts on how an editor can shape the contents of a journal and contribute to knowledge development of the field, (3) offer advice to authors on how to prepare a well-developed manuscript; and (4) provide insight for prospective editors — a realistic job preview.
