Abstract
Setting goals sounds simple. You decide what you want to accomplish and then go about doing it. But the reality is much more complex and can reveal a great deal about the kind of leader (or LINO) who is in charge. Some opt to underpromise and overdeliver. Some choose to avoid commitment to any goal at all. Some go through the motions of setting goals that sound terrific, but then you realize that you can’t quite pin down what they’re trying to achieve or how to measure their progress. I don’t have a lot of patience for any of these goalsetting styles. I believe that the best leaders set aggressive, yet achievable goals and then work with their teams to meet them.
