Abstract
Within a year of his coming to power, Chang Hsüeh-liang was locked in a struggle with Soviet interests in Manchuria. This was the result of his own indelicate manner and inept methods,1 in combination with Mukden’s attempt to deal with the visibly swelling Soviet economic tide, and by the time the crisis broke in the summer of 1929 political tide too, in the region.2
