Abstract
Since the Habitat II Conference of the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (UNCHS) in Istambul in 1996, the concepts of ‘sustainable cities’ and ‘sustainable development’ have gained ground. While admitting that ‘sustainability’ needs to be a key word in the formulation of development initiatives, it is equally important to understand the meaning of the term in the context of the countries of the South. In the macro-context of globalization and liberalization of recent decades, sustainability in development initiatives is facing a grave crisis all over the world, especially in such countries.
