Abstract

C.L.R. James was born in Trinidad in 1901 (the same year as Chairman Mao) and died in London in 1989. During an intellectually rich life he witnessed a myriad of events that interacted to produce in him a unique standpoint on life, art, sport and politics (Buhle, 1986; Stoddart, 1990; Worcester, 1996). He

  • was influenced by the birth and demise of the Soviet Empire.

  • was marked by the revelations about Stalinism.

  • observed the zenith and the disintegration of the British Empire.

  • experienced the rise of Cold War America and suffered the excesses of McCarthy.

  • was close to the centre of Pan Africanism.

  • was in the vanguard of postcolonialism.

  • posited culture and cricket at the heart of politics.
