Abstract
For the title of this chapter I have borrowed from Dick Allwright’s1 (2006) view of the role of practitioners as seekers of ‘locally helpful understandings’, extending the idea to teacher educators, whom I also see as practitioners. In the light of the Six Directions in Applied Linguistics proposed by Allwright (2006, Chapter 1 in this volume), my purpose is to describe and attempt to discuss, so as to better understand, some of the challenges (‘puzzles’, according to Allwright, 2003: 123,129) encountered in navigating along a wide-scale in-service English teacher education programme.2 As will be explained further on, this programme is connected with two different, though related areas; one is the area of continuing teacher education and the other is the area of applied linguistics research. This particular feature contributes to some of the ‘puzzles’.
I thank the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq) for supporting my research connected with teacher education (Proc. 306722/2003-8). I also thank Leila Barbara for discussing the first draft of this article with me.
