Abstract
The role of the state in providing cultural policies and services has led to the creation of marked differences between the cultural policies of Britain, France and Germany. For example, spending on culture by all governmental bodies in Germany, at £56.50 (€76.92, $86.54) per capita, is significantly higher than in France, which spends £37.80 (€51.37, $57.80) per capita on culture, and in Britain, which spends just £16.60 (€22.56, $25.38) per capita (Feist 2001).
