Abstract

The war in Iraq that commenced in spring 2003 is a reminder that the application of violence and military power continues to be an important element in international relations. Moreover, the actions of the war coalition under the US leadership are a graphic expression that the unilateral initiation of war, without a mandate of the United Nations (UN), is by no means a thing of the past.
