Abstract

It behoved the Germans to get the region back on its feet quickly, for several reasons. Its extensive agricultural resources could be used to feed the troops based in that sector of the European theatre of war as well as to augment food supply in Germany. Its industrial resources, especially the coal reserves and metallurgical industries, could be exploited for the German war effort. Strategically, the region was crucial to the German plans to invade Great Britain, as a base of operations for air raids and for the eventual Channel crossing. It was a key region in the Nazi military and economic strategy for Western Europe.
