Abstract

Habibie’s foray into international affairs did not cornmence with his assumption of the Presidency in May 1998. Formally, when he was elected as the country’s Vice-President in March 1998, President Suharto, in naming him as the first ‘executive’ Vice-President, gave him, among others, responsibilities in developing and enhancing the country’s external economic relations as well as forging ties abroad to upgrade the country’s science and technological capabilities. Habibie was also expected to develop closer ties with the Islamic world.
