Carrefour is the second-largest retailer in the world, though second to Wal-Mart by some way, with sales of €70 billion ($86 billion) in 2003 to Wal-Mart’s $250 billion. It is easily the most international, with operations in some thirty countries in Europe, South America and Asia. It was a pioneer in developing hypermarkets, and in venturing abroad. After its merger with Promodès, it has a full range of formats — hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores and hard discounters. With leadership positions in many of the countries it operates in, and its depth and breadth of international experience, it is a formidable competitor. In 2004, however, it was facing fierce price competition in its home market of France, potentially a serious weakness.
