The View from the UK — Mature Markets, High Imports and Other Problems

Abstract

This chapter examines the changing position of the UK domestic appliances industry with respect to a number of dimensions — consumption, production, ownership, trade relations and employment. It does so in the context of what might be called the ‘regional idea’. This is the idea that, in the modern political economy, ‘trade flows are dominated by exchanges within and between the three major regions of the global economy (the so-called triad): Europe, North America, and East Asia’ (Hoekman and Kostecki 2001: 9); and that over the last two decades or more there has been a regionalisation of trade and foreign direct investment flows (Kozul-Wright 1995; Ohmae, 1995).
