NGO Institutionalization into the UN System — Theoretical Framework

Abstract

Relations between societal actors and governmental institutions have been a regular topic of social scientific research and brought forward an extensive and rich body of empirical and theoretical literature. Through works on domestic societal activism, social scientists have gained knowledge about the dynamics of the relationship between societal actors and state actors. Such works assert that increased interaction between the two leads societal actors to adjust their patterns of activity. Differences in the extent to which they change their activities, however, are due to institutionalizing factors, which in turn can be internal (mobilization of resources) or external (rules and regulations for societal activism).
