Social Cohesion

  • Gavin Kennedy

Abstract

Truly, man shall not live by bread alone,1 but neither does he live alone. All 18th-century explanations for why humans first grouped together in society are redundant; humans have always lived in societies. There never was a time when individual Homo sapiens lived alone — except for a handful of ‘eccentric’ individuals and outcasts. The vast majority lived in extended ‘families’ or small bands. Humans lived in ‘families’, which grew into bands and regularly split apart in high dudgeon (human nature being what it is).
