Abstract
Merging two (or more!) large and complex institutions generates conflict on a grand scale. The textbook solution to this conflict is leadership of an equally high standard. Not surprisingly, we found an almost unanimous agreement that extraordinary leadership is central to resolving the myriad conflicts in the merger process and channelling these energies into building a new banking institution.1
