Abstract
Environmental consciousness is the hallmark of a prosperous society. It is a rich country’s prerogative. Therefore, it is not surprising that the greatest levels of environmental consciousness are probably in California which — despite pockets of abject poverty — has one of the highest average incomes per capita in the world. In 1998, $10 million was spent airlifting one whale from an aquarium back to its natural environment. They even made a film about it.
