Constitutionalism and Post-Communist Politics
Most commentators are confident of Poland’s democratic direction and of the success of the processes designed to institutionalize a functioning democracy. General Wojciech Jaruzelski, Poland’s last communist leader, himself recently stated: ‘The change is fundamental and irreversible, and I say that as a man of the old regime. There are four established pillars: democracy, the market, the rule of law, and free speech.’1
