Abstract
To investigate the geographical variations in cash-in-hand work, first, this chapter reviews the literature on how the magnitude of cash-in-hand work varies geographically both at the cross-national level as well as regionally and locally. Second, previous readings on the geographical variations in the character of cash-in-hand work will be evaluated critically and third, an attempt will be made to unpack the motives underpinning engagement in cash-in-hand work and how these vary across space. Fourth and finally, the implications of these findings for the study of social capital will be explored.
