Abstract
There is now a voluminous literature on numerous aspects of the gender divisions in employment as well as unpaid work (e.g. Gardiner, 1997; Gershuny et al., 1994; Gregory and Windebank, 2000; Hakim, 1995; Himmelweit, 2000; Vogler, 1994; Walby, 1997; Warde and Hetherington, 1993). In stark contrast, very little work exists on gender disparities in cash-in-hand work. To examine this missing work in the study of gender divisions of labour, therefore, the aim of this chapter is to analyse the extent and character of the participation of men and women in cash-in-hand work.
