Abstract
Thinking of hope as an activity and of its importance in acting is a theme continued in this chapter. Human agency per se is a broad and complex topic. One aspect of agency I will be concerned with is forms of authority which enhance or inhibit responsible agency; who or what is taken to be authoritative affects the degree of independence an agent develops from reliance on others. I will consider authority from first and third person perspectives.
