Sovereigns of England and Great Britain

  • Timothy Venning

Abstract

Arguably the ‘Kingdom of England’ was created when Edward deposed his niece Ecgwyn from the rule of Mercia in 918and was recognised as overlord by the Viking, Scots, and British lords of the North in 923/4, or when Athelstan deposed the Viking ruler Sihtric of York in 927. However, this establishment of the authority of Wessex as far as Lothian and Cumbria was reversed by the revolts following Athelstan’s death in 939, and was not permanent until 954.
