These are heavily dependant on the genealogies later drawn up in the historical work of the C9th attributed to Nennius, and at the court of Hywel ‘Dda’ of Deheubarth in the early C10th (now British Library Harleian Mss 3589 and at Worcester College, Oxford). Existing narrative accounts of early rulers mostly date from the C13th and C14th. The names of the C5th and C6th therefore are particularly remote in time from the extant documentation. There is no reason why earlier documents could not be copied accurately or lists remembered correctly, but it provides a note of caution — particularly over the habit of naming successive rulers in a simple father—son descent when the true genealogy may have been more complicated.
