Fatherhood Discourses in Parenting Magazines

Abstract

In this chapter and the next I examine some gendered discourses surrounding fatherhood in written texts. We are thus not looking at actual fatherhood practices, but rather at the discourses that seem to be drawn on in their textual representation. Like motherhood, fatherhood can be viewed as both experience and institution (Rich, 1976). As institution, it is an interesting epistemological site since the social practices that together and variously constitute fatherhood (and motherhood) are, in many cultural contexts, in a state of flux, a flux corresponding to that in gender relations more widely.
