Abstract

In this chapter you will:
  • Address the twin axial circuits of production/consumption and the regulation of aggression and sexuality as the foundational principles of society.

  • Understand the relationship between leisure and surplus wealth.

  • Examine the proposition that leisure forms and and practice revolve around the dual principles of the allocation of scarce economic resources and distribution of prestige.

  • Understand the power hierarchy that governs society and be introduced to the concepts of predatory strata, regulative mechanisms and oppositional blocs.

  • Differentiate between institutions of normative coercion and regulative mechanisms.

  • Understand the significance of regimes of power for leisure forms and practice.
