Abstract

Two days ago I was in a meeting held to discuss a submission for the award of a PhD by published work when one of my fellow committee members referred to the qualitative nature of the work under consideration as ‘soft’ research. We exchanged friendly words, but I don’t think either of us left the meeting with any greater respect for the other’s position.
