Doing Business the US Way: Selling US Enterprise and Technology

  • John Redwood

Over the last fifty years the links between the US and UK economy have grown ever stronger. Shared language, the aftermath of the Second World War, and the restless pursuit of European markets by Americans led naturally to a surge of US investment in Britain. What has been less noticed but has been equally pronounced has been the way British companies return the compliment. Indeed, British companies have invested more in the US than US companies have invested in Britain. We have now reached the point where half of all the foreign investment in Britain comes from America (Table 7.1). Two-fifths of all Britain’s investments around the world are in the US. Only a quarter of foreign investment in Britain has come from our EU trading partners, and only a third of our outward investment has gone to other EU states.
