Abstract

The world changed on 11 September 2001. The American colossus was badly damaged. The media rushed pictures of the billowing inferno in the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan and the destruction at the Pentagon in Washington around the world. The stark images of death and destruction were played and replayed endlessly, so that the whole world could see the humbling of its only superpower. People speculated on what the fourth plane would have hit if its brave passengers had not brought it down, away from people and other great buildings. The White House was still intact.
